All along, the 49ers kept hinting it was only a matter of time before they saw eye-to-eye with Trent Williams on a new contract extension.
That day arrived on Monday when the club and their veteran left tackle agreed to a new two-year, $50 million restructured contract extension. The announcement of his new deal came via a tweet from his Elite Loyalty Sports agency.
The 37-year-old future Hall of Famer will get a $22 million signing bonus and $37 million in full guarantees. According to his agents, he has surpassed $400 million in contracts and $225 million in full guarantees, making Williams the first non-QB in NFL history to surpass $400M in contracts & $225M in guarantees.
The three-time first-team All-Pro was set to enter free agency in 2027, but was poised to go into 2026 on the final year of a contract featuring no guaranteed money. At the same time, he was due a $32.21 million base salary and a cap hit of $46.34 million, numbers the 49ers were clearly keen to lower.
Williams, who turns 38 in July, was set to begin the last year of his three-year, $82.7 million contract. However, the guaranteed money of that deal had expired, and it was unlikely he would play on such a non-secured contract.
The new agreement alleviates all of that and wards off by two seasons the 49ers’ need to find his heir apparent.
However, expect the 49ers to be active at tackle during this weekend’s draft.
