In just under two weeks tourists from around the globe will be flocking to Edinburgh to enjoy the city’s famous new year Hogmanay celebrations.

Those that are choosing to stay a few days will be wanting to take in Edinburgh’s historic sites, including Edinburgh castle, Arthur’s Seat, The National Museum of Scotland and the National Monument.

They will also be pleased, to know Edinburgh, home to more than 512,000 people, has been ranked sixth on the Insider Monkey’s top 10 most walkable cities in the world, making it the most walkable city in the UK.

“With clean parks and several sightseeing places. On average, Edinburgh residents are only 308m away from the nearest green space,” the investment website notes.

The city has much better air quality than London and also sits on the coast with its own beaches. The air quality score for Edinburgh is 17, while the safety index score is 68.84.

For travellers who do not want to visit all the city’s top five attractions, including the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle, there is a regular tram and bus service, although most of the main tourist sites are located 2.2 miles from each other.

Hogmanay in Edinburgh has been declared as one of the ‘Top 100 things to do before you die’ and appeared in the Discovery Channel’s – Top 25 World Travel Experiences.

Visit Scotland also lists the Johnnie Walker store in Princes Street, Lauriston Castle and Gardens and The Edinburgh Dungeons as other popular places worth visiting.

In the dungeons, which are recommended as an evening/night-time visit, adults can re-vist Edinburgh’s plague-ridden streets and find out about the city’s gruesome history.

There is also the Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, one of the largest stages in the UK and has been graced by Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy and David Bowie.
