The Players Championship feels like a major, but doesn’t need to be one

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Make no mistake about the gravity of this week’s Players Championship, which begins with Thursday’s opening round at TPC Sawgrass:

It’s a major event on the global golf calendar.

But it’s not a major championship.

The age-old debate as to whether the Players should be included alongside the four major championships — the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship — was thought to be put to bed a number of years ago. But the PGA Tour, which owns and operates the Players Championship, is currently running a promotional TV campaign with the theme, “March is going to be major.”
