A knife-wielding maniac stabbed three people during a clash on the side of a Virginia highway Sunday — before a state trooped shot him in the chest.

The Capital Beltway on I-495 Southbound closest to Annandale, Virginia, roughly 15 miles outside of Washington, DC, was at a total standstill by 1:30 p.m. More than a dozen police cars were still on the scene hours later, as captured on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s traffic cameras.

The carnage unfolded after an irate man allegedly started stabbing people in another vehicle involved in a “property damage crash,” according to the Fairfax police dispatcher.

One responding trooper with the Virginia State Police opened fire just before 1:30 p.m., striking the knife-wielding suspect twice in the chest, as recounted on the dispatcher.

There were four confirmed victims, including the man shot by police and “multiple individuals down with stab wounds,” according to the dispatch audio.

Medics had to resuscitate one victim at the scene. Two others were critically injured, emergency responders said over the dispatch.

The victims were all rushed to the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. No troopers were injured in the confrontation.

The VDOT advised that people “seek alternate routes” as miles-long traffic continues to stretch down the beltway.
