This beautiful village is home to one of the best beaches in Ireland.
The village of Dunfanaghy is near to the impressive Trá Mór beach – known for its beautiful coastal views.
Trá Mór means big beach in Gaelic and it may not be unlikely you’ll get most of the massive area by yourself when you visit it.
The idyllic beach is found in County Donegal’s Horn Head peninsula and to get there you’ll have to go by foot as there is no road which leads down to the beach.
But the walk down to the two-mile arc of sand will allow you to explore nature on the way and when you get there, you won’t be disappointed.
To get to Trá Mór, head from the village of Dunfanaghy towards Horn Head, you’ll cross a low bridge and you will see a sign for a car park and the Lurgabrack Nature Reserve.
Walk along the tree-lined path over the dunes to the incredible and secluded beach.
One person who visited the Horn Head loop wrote on travel website Tripadvisor: “We happened to fall on this stunning loop drive by accident. It is a drive up a very narrow and twisting road, not for the faint hearted!
“We were rewarded by stunning views of the cliffs at Horn head. This area is not promoted at all and in my opinion exceeds the beautiful Slieve League cliffs.
“Parking etc would be problematic if it was busy but it was very quiet when we were there. We were told by a fellow traveller that it is a great spot to view puffins.”
If you’re interested in Dunfanaghy’s history, you should take a trip to the Workhouse – Donegal Famine Heritage Centre.
The once-operational workhouse is a monument of history that, thanks to the local community, is now a centre for learning and culture for both Dunfanaghy and visitors to the area.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “The employees were very welcoming and informative. The exhibition is well laid out and the audio descriptions and artefacts provide a fascinating insight into the period through the story of a local woman.”
