Why Steph Curry could become Hollywood’s next breakout star

A new moviestar might be gracing the silver screens soon and it’s not Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or Timothee Chalamet.

It’s Stephen Curry.

The Golden State Warriors two-time NBA MVP recently walked the red carpet at a screening of his new film “GOAT,” an animated children’s film he produced and voiced, that is loosely based on his real life rise from under-recruited high school prospect to NBA superstar.

The screening took place in Oakland, and the talk on the carpet amongst Curry and his co-stars was not about the film itself, but the possibility of Curry turning to acting after his NBA career is complete.

“To use Steph’s words, he’s incredibly coachable,” co-director Tyree Dillihay told The Mercury News on the red carpet, when asked about Curry’s vocal performance as Lenny the giraffe in the movie.

Comedian W. Kamau Bell went further: “He is a natural born entertainer.”

Hollywood has long flirted with NBA royalty. Michael Jordan soared in “Space Jam.” Shaquille O’Neal granted three chaotic wishes in “Kazaam.” Kevin Durant’s “Thunderstruck”… well, it happened. The results have ranged from iconic to unwatchable.

But Curry might be different.

At 37, Curry has already built the infrastructure. His Unanimous Media, founded in 2018, produced Breakthrough, the Ryan Coogler-backed Stephen Curry: Underrated, and his Sundance award-winning documentary The Baddest Speechwriter of All. He’s hosted network television (Holey Moley) and dabbled in sports comedy (Mr. Throwback).

“I don’t even want to limit myself on what’s possible down the road,” Curry told The Mercury News when asked about his future as an actor.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned charisma into a billion-dollar brand. Curry has something just as potent — joy. The way he plays feels cinematic already, like a superhero origin story written in jump shots and celebrations.

When the final buzzer eventually sounds on his NBA career, don’t be surprised if the next arena he conquers has a box office attached to it.
