Nevada sportsbooks’ Super Bowl winnings down from last year

The Nevada sportsbooks cleaned up during the Super Bowl once again.

The state’s gaming control board reported that sportsbooks won nearly $9.9 million during the Seahawks’ win over the Patriots on Sunday.

That’s down from last season’s massive $22 million-plus figure, but still a big win for Nevada bookies.

It appears sports betting as a whole in the Silver State is heading in the wrong direction, though.

A little more than $133 million was wagered on the Big Game in Nevada this year, which is a 10-year low for the state.

Last year, in a high-profile match up between the Eagles and Chiefs, more than $151 million was put down in Nevada for the Super Bowl.

With much less starpower this year, and the rise of online sportsbooks across the U.S., in addition to the even more recent emergence of prediction markets, Westgate SuperBook’s John Murray wasn’t too surprised.

“You can legally bet on sports all over the country now, and it wasn’t the best matchup,” Murray told ESPN. “It didn’t have the star power of some recent Super Bowls.”

The betting public did well on the game outcome, with the popular Seahawks, who got the bulk of the wagers and money in the lead up to the contest, covering the 4.5-point spread and winning outright.

Betting on the NFL?

With just two offensive touchdowns scored by relatively non-big-name players AJ Barner and Mack Hollins, the sportsbooks did well with most anytime TD props going down as a loss.

Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold and star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba also had quiet nights, hurting Over bettors on their respective props.
