Luka Doncic injury update ahead of Lakers’ game vs Warriors

Lakers star guard Luka Doncic’s status is “day to day” because of a mild hamstring he was diagnosed with, coach JJ Redick told reporters ahead of Saturday’s home game against the Warriors.

Doncic suffered the hamstring injury late in the second quarter of Thursday’s comeback win over the 76ers.

He left the game with just over two minutes left before halftime and went back to the locker room after subbing out, kicking the scorer’s table seemingly out of frustration at Crypto.com Arena.

In light of the uncertainty of Doncic’s status in the immediate aftermath of the injury, Redick was brief with his response when asked if there was relief for Doncic’s prognosis compared with a more serious hamstring injury.

“Yeah,” Redick said. “I mean, again, it’s day to day.”

Doncic has averaged a league-leading 32.8 points to go with 8.7 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals through 42 games.

He was named an All-Star starter in January, the sixth time in his eight NBA seasons he’s received All-Star honors.

After Saturday’s matchup, the Lakers have back-to-back home games against the Thunder on Monday and the Spurs on Tuesday, with their final game before All-Star weekend (Feb. 13-15) being against Doncic’s former team, the Mavericks, on Thursday.

Redick, who was briefly a teammate with Doncic in Dallas for half a season in 2020-21, addressed whether he believes playing in the All-Star Game on Feb. 15 matters to Doncic.

“I’ve been around him as a teammate and as a coach, and I know he plays; if he’s able to play, he plays,” Redick said. “I think he wants to be in the All-Star Game. I know he wants to play against Dallas, the game before the All-Star Game. He has his team working on him day and night. So again, it’s day to day, and when he’s ready to play, we’ll get him out there.”
