For most in the sporting world, the name “Cabo” is less about a vacation destination and more an insult regarding the end of a season.
However, if you’re LA Rams head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford, the word Cabo is exactly as it’s intended to be: A vacation spot in which to unwind from the the previous season.
While the Rams’ future remains in limbo as they enter an extremely important offseason, McVay, Stafford, their respective wives Veronika McVay and Kelly Stafford, and a group of friends took to the sunny beaches of Mexico to enjoy some much-needed time off.
And possibly, if you’re McVay, some necessary recruitment of your star player.
Reports surfaced that Stafford was considering retirement prior to the beginning of last season, and after Los Angeles came up short again this year — falling to the Seahawks in the NFC championship game — it’s not hard to fathom the 17-year veteran and future first-ballot Hall of Famer calling it quits for good to spend time with his family and pursue other opportunities.
However, Stafford is coming off arguably the best season of his career. He’s the favorite to win the NFL MVP award (announced Thursday night at NFL Honors). And next year’s Super Bowl is at SoFi Stadium, his hometown stadium.
Returning for one more year, albeit with a significant pay raise, has the potential to be the Hollywood ending every athlete dreams of.
With Stafford in the fold, the Rams remain a Super Bowl contender. In fact, if they get their special teams unit squared away, they will likely go into next season as the favorite to win the Super Bowl.
Without him, they are a good team with a glaring hole at the most important position on the field. No better than half the other teams in the league.
Time will tell how the story unfolds, but at least McVay is doing everything he can to get his star player to stay.
