Dozens of firefighters are battling a huge blaze which has broken out in east London.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a fire at a terraced house on Ley Street in Ilford.

Reports of an explosion have been shared on social media.

The roof and first floor of the two-storey property are on fire.

London Fire Brigade station commander Darren McTernan is at the scene. He said: “Firefighters are working hard to bring this fire under control.

“Ley Street is closed between Eastern Avenue and Vicarage Road, impacting traffic in the surrounding area, so please avoid the area if you can.

“One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders is being used at the scene to help fight the fire from above. The Brigade’s drone team have also been deployed to the incident, offering the incident commander an aerial view of the scene.”

Control officers took the first of 25 calls regarding the fire at 4.09pm and mobilised crews from Ilford, Dagenham, Barking and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
