The UK is currently experiencing some respite from the bitterly cold weather, but it will only be a matter of hours before the latest cold snap blasts Brits. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice in six UK regions, and as a result, the forecaster is urging Brits to take three steps this week in preparation for the return of bone-chilling weather.
Spanning 15 hours, the weather warning for Scotland will come into force in just a few hours’ time at 7pm this evening (January 12), and will remain in place until 10am Tuesday morning. Covering Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, and Strathclyde, the warning has the potential to cause disruption this evening and into tomorrow morning. The public is advised to take extra care and be aware of the risk of some minor travel disruption.
Commenting on the weather warning, the Met Office said: “A combination of clear spells and light winds will allow road temperatures to fall below freezing on Monday evening across northern Scotland, continuing overnight and into Tuesday morning.
“This will allow icy stretches to form on untreated surfaces. The public are advised to take extra care and be aware of the risk of some minor travel disruption.”
The latest weather warning follows the UK’s heavy snowfall last week, with Storm Goretti causing widespread disruption across large parts of the country.
Temperatures plunged well below freezing, making travel particularly challenging due to the ice on roads and airport runways.
The Met Office recommends that Brits affected by the weather warning should prepare in three ways, these are:
- Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.
- If you need to make a journey on foot or by bike, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery.
- Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
