One Christmas, Princess Kate decided to give a special gift to Queen Elizabeth II.
Each year, the royal family gift each other a joke present as part of a family tradition.
In the past, gifts have reportedly included a leather toilet seat and a ‘grow your own girlfriend kit’.
But one year, Princess Kate gave the Queen a very memorable gift.
In a 2016 ITV documentary celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, Kate said: “I can remember being at Sandringham for the first time at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present.
“I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her? ‘ I thought back to what I would give my own grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’ll make her something,’ which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny’s recipe for chutney.
“I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day that it was on the table. I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody.”
Princess Kate spoke about the late Queen Elizabeth II’s love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She said the Queen always had a gift for them when they came to stay.
She also revealed the special bond between the Queen and Princess Charlotte, saying: “The Queen was really thrilled that it was a little girl and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington she was one of our first visitors here. I think she’s very fond of Charlotte. She’s always watching what she’s up to.”
Prince William has also recalled a time when he brought Princess Kate a gift. On Peter Crouch’s podcast, he said: “I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once – she’s never let me forget that.”
He said it had seemed like a good idea at the time but Princess Kate has never let him forget it.
