Liverpool star Mohamed Salah changed his profile picture and cover photo on X (formerly Twitter) after being dropped for his side’s Champions League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt and was then criticised on social media for his cameo off the bench. The Reds were in fine form in Germany as they thrashed their opponents 5-1 following a difficult run of results.
Salah has become one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players during his time at Anfield, which began in 2017 when he joined the club from Roma. The Egypt international has bagged 248 goals and 116 assists in 413 appearances for the Reds and has helped his side win the Champions League and two Premier League titles. But he has been way off his best this season and paid the price by losing his starting position at Deutsche Bank Park.
Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Salah’s profile picture on X showed him holding the Premier League trophy in his Liverpool shirt while beaming from ear to ear.
After the match, he changed it to a picture of him smiling with his two children.
Meanwhile, his cover photo went from a snap of him holding aloft the Champions League trophy alongside his Reds team-mates to a plain grey background.
Liverpool ran riot in Germany after Rasmus Kristensen had opened the scoring for the home side as Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate all netted before half-time.
Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai completed the rout in the second half, with summer signing Florian Wirtz grabbing the final two assists after being recalled to the starting line-up by manager Arne Slot.
Salah was introduced to the action with 18 minutes remaining as he came on to replace Ekitike in attack.
But he was slammed for a moment of selfishness after choosing to shoot from a tight angle rather than teeing-up Wirtz, who was standing unmarked between the penalty spot and the six-yard box looking at an open goal in front of him.
Liverpool fan @KayLFC05_ posted a still of the opportunity on X and took aim at Salah as he wrote: “Salah hates Wirtz lol.”
Meanwhile, @jeremihchika penned: “Salah proving why he needs more bench time. That was very selfish.” And @Nickobe4 added: “I don’t know what he wants to prove again. Put it on the plate for the guy.”
But other fans defended the 33-year-old, with @MikeMbithi7 asking: “What if he scored? Let’s pipe down.” And @AdamGoldson11 added: “No reason to pass. He should score there, but he didn’t. Thats the real problem.”
