Now that the temperatures have dropped outside, more and more people will be thinking about switching on the heating if they haven’t done so already. However, with bills already climbing higher and higher, the thought of cranking up the thermostat can be quite off-putting.

The Ofgem price cap rose at the beginning of the month, which is based on how much energy you typically use in the house. Staying warm at home is really important, but if you aren’t keen on relying on the heating too much, there are things you can do. One solution involves a £10.99 item from The Range which can help you to stay cosy without spending too much.

The bargain retailer is currently selling a pair of thermal curtains that are said to keep the heat in and the light out. They’re fully lined, machine washable and available in six different colours, with prices starting from just £10.99.

They’re great for effectively insulating your home, keeping the chill out and making sure you stay warm. Made from a heavyweight fabric, the curtains are said to ‘transform’ your room with their ‘blackout qualities’ and ‘unique Supersoft drape material of soft sheen’.

They’re also the same colour on both sides, with the blackout weave lining on the inside, making them ideal for any room that you want to keep a bit warmer without relying on the heating too much.

Coming in a variety of sizes, the curtains are worth picking up if you’re in need of a new pair and want something that’s going to make your home more energy-efficient this winter. However, it’s not just thermal curtains that can keep you cosy without relying on the heating.

Electric blankets have been a firm favourite for years now, as they serve as a much more cost-friendly way to keep the cold at bay. Whether you like to sit with yours on the sofa or take it to bed, there are so many different styles, colours and fabrics to choose from.

However, a word of warning has been issued to anyone with an electric blanket, as they could end up posing a safety risk if they aren’t used correctly.

The Staffordshire Fire and Rescue service recently took to TikTok to share some advice on the best way to use electric blankets and portable heaters for anyone who’s using them to save money on heating.

They said: “Electric blankets and portable heaters are a great way to keep warm on a budget. However, they can become a fire risk if they’re not used correctly. Watch our advice video for some important information!”

During the footage, the fire safety specialist warned: “Electric blankets are a very cost-effective way to keep warm this winter. However, it is important that we make sure that we use these correctly.

“Before use, make sure you check for any damaged cables as this may affect the use of the blanket. Make sure it is plugged into a wall socket and not an extension cable, and you must make sure that it is unplugged and turned off before you go to bed.”
