Ruben Amorim has four Man Utd issues to address for Liverpool showdown | Football | Sport

Manchester United went into the October international break in good spirits after a comfortable and crucially uneventful victory at home to Sunderland. It was a much-needed confidence boost after the disappointment against Brentford, with the Red Devils jumping up to 10th in the table.

It’s still a long way from where United and Ruben Amorim want to be, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction. The question is, will it prove a case of one step forward, two steps back again? United’s credentials will be put to the test this weekend when they take a trip to Liverpool, with Amorim needing to address four big issues ahead of the Merseyside clash.

Bruno Fernandes worry

It was more like a confidence-sapping international break for Bruno Fernandes, as the midfielder struggled to deliver his best stuff for Portugal during their World Cup qualifiers. He huffed and puffed during the 2-2 draw with Hungary, picking up a booking which will rule him out of Portugal’s next qualifier, all before being hooked on the hour mark. Local media theorised that Fernandes looked fatigued – something Amorim won’t want to hear ahead of Sunday’s showdown. The manager needs to make sure he’s energised at Anfield.

Casemiro fitness concern

From one leggy midfielder to another, as Casemiro was also busy for Brazil over the international break. Not only did the ex-Real Madrid ace register two 90-minute outings, he also faces a lengthy flight back from Japan, which is where Brazil’s friendly was held on Tuesday. Casemiro has quietly become one of the best performers in Amorim’s system, but after a hectic week of playing and travelling, the coach might need to use Manuel Ugarte instead.

Left-wing decision needed

Coincidence or by design? That will be the question on Amorim’s mind heading into this clash, given United looked much better with Mason Mount starting on the left instead of Matheus Cunha. Keeping fit has been an issue at times for Mount, but United certainly looked a more stable side with the ex-Chelsea ace in the starting XI.

Goalkeeper conundrum

One of the biggest positives for United from the Sunderland clash was the performance of Senne Lammens between the sticks. While he didn’t do anything spectacular, the Belgian was a reassuring presence – something United have lacked for some time. The expectation is he’ll start again, but they don’t come much bigger than Anfield away for a second start of the season. Just another thing for Amorim to think about!
