If you love visiting lesser-known destinations, these top 10 locations shared by the travel giant could be great for your next holiday. Expedia’s 2026 destinations of the year list is powered by real-time data from daily visitors to the Expedia site and app. It comes as the travel giant releases its Unpack ‘26: The Trends in Travel.

It highlights where global interest is rising fast. On the list this year includes France, Italy, as well as further afield places in Canada and Mexico. Six of these hotspots also meet the criteria for Expedia’s new Smart Travel Health Check, which recognises destinations that proactively manage tourism in a sustainable way.

Ariane Gorin, CEO of Expedia Group, said: “Some of my most unforgettable travel moments come from immersing myself in local cultures, supporting local economies, and exploring less-travelled destinations.

“With one billion average monthly travel searches, Expedia Group isn’t just a travel marketplace, we’re a catalyst for positive change.

“We have a responsibility to shape the future of travel: one that’s smarter, more sustainable, and deeply respectful of the places we go.”

Big Sky, Montana, U.S.

Tucked in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Big Sky in Montana offers activities year-round. In winter, the region transforms into a snow lover’s paradise, and in the summer, enjoy scenic hiking trails.

Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa, Japan’s southern island chain, blends turquoise waters and coral reefs with a unique Ryukyuan heritage. Once its own kingdom, the region now offers a mix of hospitality, history, and a laid-back island life.

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is a hidden Mediterranean gem, combining crystal-clear waters, ancient history and untouched landscapes. From glamorous beaches to a vibrant city, Sardinia offers an Italian escape without the tourists.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Off Vietnam’s southwest coast, Phu Quoc Island combines white sand beaches with emerald waters. Once a quiet fishing hub, it’s now a blend of beach resorts and night markets.

Savoie, France

Nestled in the French Alps, Savoie is home to world-class ski resorts, perfect for a winter vacation. In summer, expect to enjoy hikes, cycling and sailing, as well as enjoying cheese fondue and alpine wines.

Fort Walton Beach, Florida, U.S.

North Florida’s Gulf Coast is a region of outstanding natural beauty, with idyllic beaches and nature walks where you can explore the state’s indigenous parks. An ideal location for those who love the outdoors, activities include snorkelling, hiking and dolphin watching.

Ucluelet, Canada

Visitors in Ucluelet can enjoy surfing, kayaking, and spotting whales and sea lions just offshore. There’s also plenty of land-based activities such as rock climbing, ziplining, biking and animal observation. Or, if you want to relax, there are plenty of top hotels and holiday rentals to do so.

Cotswolds, UK

The Cotswolds is one of England’s most picturesque regions, with charming towns such as Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. Explore historic gardens, enjoy traditional English pubs and tearooms and the classic Cotswold stone.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Nestled in Mexico’s central highlands, San Miguel de Allende is a small city with striking architecture, ancient religious buildings and cobbled streets. It’s widely known for its artisans and artists, with some of their best works in the galleries and studios of Fabrica La Aurora.
