Massive broadband upgrade proves just how bad your Wi-Fi router currently is

Having a decent broadband connection is now a key part of daily lives, with the web allowing us to work from home, stay secure via devices such as connected cameras and keep entertained. Although the rate at which the internet is beamed into homes is controlled by the UK’s Internet Service Providers (ISP), there is another vital link in the chain. That’s the Wi-Fi router that sits in the corner of millions of rooms across the country.

Most homes will likely be using a device provided by their ISP, and it may now be seriously out of date. Popular Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi 5 devices have now been superseded by Wi-Fi 6, which offers much-improved connectivity.

There’s also the introduction of Wi-Fi 7, which pushes things further and not only offers better download speeds but also more devices connected to the box at the same time.

If that wasn’t enough to have consumers thinking they need a refresh, one firm is now testing a router with Wi-Fi 8 technology inside. The team at TP-Link say they have just completed a successful test of this system, which could power homes of the future.

Wi-Fi 8 will be able to manage even quicker speeds, along with being far more stable and reliable.

Stronger coverage is promised which should help to cut down on those annoying deadspots and WiFi 8 also manages more devices simultaneously and maintains a stable connection as you move around the house.

Devices experience less lag and greater stability – even at greater distances from the router

“Through continuous collaboration with partners within the ecosystem, TP-Link is advancing the technologies that will shape the next era of connectivity,” TP-Link explained.

“The goal is to provide consumers and businesses with the highest speed, stability, and reliability for the needs of the future. The first throughput test marks an important milestone for the next level of highly reliable connectivity.”

Of course, this is just a test right now, and there’s no word on when Wi-Fi 8 will become commonplace in homes.

One thing this update should do is get all of us checking how old our routers are and whether upgrades to Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 are needed.

Some ISPs now offer improved routers with Sky and EE both recently announcing Wi-Fi 7-compatible hubs with some of their more premium plans.

Give your provider a call and see what’s available.
