A new drama released on Netflix has earned praise by viewers and critics alike.
There are a number of fan favourite dramas on Netflix, and new additions, like Black Rabbit and House of Guinness. The streaming giant is known for regularly bringing out fresh shows and films for viewers to get stuck into.
It recently premiered Boots, an eight-episode series set in Louisiana in the 1990s that follows Cameron, a bullied gay teenager who joins the US Marine Corps with his best friend. Netflix’s official description of the drama reads: “After impulsively joining the U.S. Marine Corps, a bullied teen finds new purpose – and unexpected brotherhood – with his motley team of fellow recruits.”
Alex, known for his TV and film content on TikTok, shared a video on the platform discussing Boots. He said: “Netflix have dropped another series today but it’s actually having amazing reviews.
“USA Today said it’s the best thing that Netflix has produced in years but is it actually worth watching or should you skip it? Let’s get into it.”
The TV buff then gave details of the plot, saying that Cameron, “desperate for a new chapter” and “determined to hide his sexuality”, enlists in the US Marine Corps but has no idea what he’s signed up for.
Alex revealed that Boots was inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir called The Pink Marine and it is executive produced by Norman Lear who brought out popular 1970s sitcoms, like All in the Family and The Jeffersons.
He added: “And from what I’ve seen so far , it does hit all of the heartstrings that Norman Lear’s work is known for but it also feels fresh and bold and it has an amazing 90s soundtrack, like George Michael and Wilson Phillips, and just the set up of a gay man in this environment is riveting to watch and we’ve never seen anything like it, I don’t think.”
Boots stars Miles Heizer as Cameron, Liam Oh as Ray McCaffey, Cameron’s best friend, and Max Parker as Sergeant Sullivan. Vera Farmiga, known for starring in The Conjuring franchise, plays Barbara, Cameron’s narcissistic mum.
Alex continued: “We also have a really strong and diverse cast. It’s full of memorable and distinctive characters.
“Because everyone’s so fully fleshed out it makes you feel really invested really early on.” The TV reviewer has watched three episodes of the series so far and admitted he can already feel himself falling in love with the characters.
Alex’s TikTok clip has garnered plenty of views, likes and comments. One user stated: “One of the best shows I’ve seen this year.”
Another added: “Just finished it, I personally think it’s the best series I’ve watched on Netflix in a very long time, amazing acting by all.” A third user agreed: “It is one of the best things I’ve seen in ages. Very engaging.”
