New data shows UK shoppers could save a tidy sum on an average basket per week by switching to Aldi. The retail giant known for its great promotions and prices has also regained the top spot as YouGov’s Most Popular Supermarket. Major stores in Britain continue to battle it out over prices, yet new research shows that shoppers could save up to £22 on an average basket by switching to Aldi.

A survey comparing the price of a 33-item basket of grocery items at all major UK supermarkets, conducted by The Grocer magazine, crowned Aldi at the cheapest for the sixth consecutive time. Coming in at £62.80, Aldi’s basket was some 33.5% cheaper than the most expensive competitor, Waitrose, meaning shoppers could save £22.27 by making the switch.

In recent months, Aldi has reduced over 900 prices across its range, investing more than a whopping £300m in price cuts since the start of 2025.

The comparison survey shows that Aldi won by just 38p, beating Lidl which has an average basket price of £63.18.

Asda, while making nationwide price cuts last week, came in third place at £65.68 for a week of groceries, outperforming its competitors. Asda was 3.7% cheaper than Tesco, 4.7% cheaper than Sainsbury’s and 5.7% ahead of Morrisons.

The most expensive supermarket was Waitrose, with a basket price of £85.07, making it 35.5% more costly than Aldi’s.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Shoppers know where to find real value – and we’re committed to delivering unbeatable prices every time customers shop with us.

“Our focus doesn’t change: helping customers save on the products they buy, week in, week out. With over £300 million invested in price cuts since January, we’re ensuring lower prices stay – not just for now, but for good.”

Aldi’s position as the UK’s best-value supermarket has been reconfirmed, at the same time that its popularity with shoppers in Britain continues to grow.

The retailer has also regained the top spot as Most Popular Supermarket, according to new polling data from YouGov for the three months to September 2025. M&S came in at a close second, while Tesco Express placed third.
