Gardeners urged to put coffee on lawns in October

Everyone wants a lush, thick green lawn to enjoy in summer, whether for a spot of sunbathing, a bit of outdoor sports, or just relaxing with an ice-cold drink when the warm weather returns next spring. But grass maintenance is an often-overlooked job for gardeners. Over the winter, low light levels, lots of rain and bouts of ice and frost or even snow can pile up problems for lawns and grass, which can compound to weaken it before the warmer conditions return.

Many of us will rush outside during the first warm weeks of summer, then scratch our heads, wondering why the lawn is looking so patchy and tired. By then, it’s much harder to turn things around, so by making an effort this autumn, you can prepare your lawn before the first frosts of October and have a thicker, greener, more resilient lawn in place by next summer.

One way you can boost your lawn without spraying chemicals is by sprinkling coffee grounds across the grass.

Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can either be sprinkled directly on the lawn or mixed with water.

The minerals in coffee can boost your grass, without burning it or damaging it, and without causing harm to the wildlife that depend on it, including worms, moths, butterflies and birds, all of which can be affected by chemical fertiliser sprays but won’t mind a splash of fresh java.

As GardeningKnowHow.com says: “It isn’t the caffeine that stimulates healthy grass growth, but rather the nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals that coffee grounds contain.

“These nutrients are released slowly, which is a big benefit over quick-release synthetic fertilisers. The nutrients in coffee grounds are slowly broken down, allowing the turf to have a longer period of time to absorb them, ensuring stronger turf for longer.”

Lilydale Instant Lawn backs this up: “Coffee grounds are an excellent, eco-friendly way to give your lawn a nutrient boost. They are rich in nitrogen, which is a crucial element for grass growth.

“Using coffee grounds on your lawn isn’t just a summer activity; it can also be beneficial in winter. The organic material can improve soil health during the dormant season.

“By incorporating coffee grounds into your lawn care routine, you can enjoy a greener, healthier lawn while also recycling waste. Give it a try and see the difference it makes!”
