Morrisons has been closing down cafes across the country, with many having shut up shop for the final time. It comes as the supermarket, which has close to 500 stores across the UK, restructures in a bid to compete in today’s economic climate. As well as cafes, Morrisons has closed a number of other services, such as several Morrisons Daily convenience stores. It also announced plans to close some florists and meat counters.

It comes as Aldi recently overtook Morrisons to become the fourth biggest supermarket chain in the UK. Morrisons started as an egg and butter stall in 1899 and has since grown into an iconic supermarket found in towns and cities across the country. The restructuring resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs, but the supermarket said that it was committed to redeploying staff whose jobs had been affected.

52 cafes,13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters, four pharmacies and all 18 market kitchens are affected by the closures. Sainsbury’s made similar moves this year when it announced that its cafes across the country would be closing.

The full list of Morrisons cafes shutting under the closures is:

Chief executive Rami Baitieh previously said that Morrisons is focused on delivering value to customers amidst the current retail climate challenges. However,  Morrison reported a 3.9% increase in like-for-like sales and a 4.2% rise in total sales to £3.9 billion in the second quarter of its financial year.

Morrisons reported losses of £919 million last year and £1.3 billion the year before that. But the company posted a pre-tax profit of £2.1 billion for the year ending October 27, 2024, which marked a significant turnaround.
