Cleaning expert reveals 5 surprising products ‘you really don’t need’

These days, it is easy to get influenced by the seemingly endless stream of cleaning adverts on television or the cleaning content creators on social media. While they may be telling you that you need a million different sprays, powders and pastes for your home, this isn’t really the case, an expert has revealed.

In fact, the ‘Queen of Clean’ has shared that you don’t need as many cleaning products as you may think – and sometimes, less is more. Lynsey Crombie is known as the Queen of Clean and is regularly spotted on ITV’s This Morning to discuss household chores. She also boasts an impressive social media following, and shares videos with hacks and advice.

In one video, Lynsey revealed that there are several products out there that are “unnecessary” and that we “don’t always need”. The first on her list was drain unblocker, Lynsey said: “Instead of using those harsh chemicals, try a bicarb flush or even a drain snake. They’re so satisfying to use and pull out all that hidden gunk. You will be amazed.”

The expert also said that carpet refreshers, which you shake onto your floors before vacuuming them up, aren’t vital. She explained: “Do we really need them? No, not really. Instead, make up your own using bicarb and a few drops of essential oils.”

Lynsey said to sprinkle this mix on your carpet before leaving for 15 minutes and vacuuming it back up. She added: “It’s simple, natural, and something you can do every so often.”

Kettle descalers might be seen as an easy way to clean out your kettle and rid the appliance of limescale and grime, but there is another, cheaper alternative.

Lynsey said: “Instead, use a juicy lemon, slice it up, put it in the kettle, fill with water, boil, let it set and then rinse. It will look and smell fresh within minutes.”

She also feels that homeowners don’t always need to buy mould sprays, stating: “Unless your mould is really severe, you don’t need them.

White vinegar works brilliantly instead. Just spray, leave it to sit then rinse away. Make it a habit to clean your bathroom with white vinegar to prevent it from coming back.”

Finally, Lynsey told her followers to swap out their dryer sheets for tumble dryer balls. While the sheets “smell lovely”, the balls “reduce drying time and they’re completely reusable”, making them a more sustainable option, both for your budget and for the environment.

Lynsey said that by making “simple swaps” to your cleaning routine, you are able to lower your costs and produce less waste but still get a “naturally sparkling home”.
