Freezing food is a great way to save on food waste and money, while also being incredibly convenient when you need a quick meal or snack. Chips are an easy food to whip up from frozen, but sometimes they can lack crispiness and crunch.
To help give frozen chips that extra bite and restaurant-worthy quality, chef Josh Weissman tested out a recipe coined by fellow chef, Chris Young. Chris’ recipe suggested not using an oven to help crisp up chips, but another much-loved appliance instead: the air fryer. In a TikTok video from September, Josh claimed these were the “crunchiest” air fryer chips ever.
First, take your frozen chips and place them in a microwaveable container with some water. Allow them to sit in the water for 30 seconds before pouring it away.
Place a lid on the container and give the chips a good shake to help fluff them up. Once the chips are fluffy, place them in the microwave and cook them for five minutes until they are steaming.
Next, pour the chips into the air fryer basket and cook at 200℃/400℉ for 15 minutes. Josh advised shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time.
To give the chips some more flavour after they’ve cooked, Josh suggested adding some melted beef fat and some salt. He said: “These are insane. I’m gotta shoutout my friend Chris Young, he’s a genius.”
Josh’s video has been viewed over a massive 2.4 million times, receiving 222,700 likes and 441 comments. Rhea said: “Those look DELICIOUS!”
Ryan commented: “Thank you Joshua for doing the Lords work we have all been trying to master!! We aren’t worthy…” Another wrote: “I actually buy these frozen fries, so imma save this video and try this.”
Alysha suggested: “Lol, you can just air fry them a minute or two more than the suggested time and they’re crispier.”
Cody said, “I made these last night. They are crazy good,” while JR wrote, “Just tried these…legit!!!”
