A British Airways flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a retired senior military officer fell seriously ill on board and died, reports suggest. The plane had departed from London Heathrow for Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja late on Sunday night but had to change course and head to El Prat airport in Barcelona, according to Nigerian media.
The flight was due to arrive in Abuja at 5am on Monday. According to Nigerian outlet The Guardian, the deceased was a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal who is thought to have passed away while the plane was in the air.
Reports suggest he was in his 80s and had been terminally ill before boarding the flight.
The incident reportedly sparked chaos onboard, which itself sparked a medical episode involving a pregnant woman, The Independent reported, citing local media.
The exact nature of both incidents and the condition of the woman is not clear.
According to reports, BA told fliers: “Passengers are advised to expect an email with more information and can reach out to the airline’s Live Chat feature for support.
“British Airways acknowledges the inconvenience and thanks passengers for their patience and understanding.
“We’d like to advise that the replacement aircraft for your flight to Abuja is now on its way.
