A top-rated horror flick that fans claim leaves ‘a lasting scare’ is now streaming for free – perfectly timed for Halloween season. Released in 2012, Sinister can now be viewed on streaming service Tubi. The film features four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke as troubled crime writer Ellison Oswalt.
Eager to write a best seller, Ellison secretly moves his family into a house where the brutal murders he is investigating took place. However, when he discovers an unsettling video that exposes paranormal activity within the home, the writer must confront the supernatural threat, reports the Mirror.
The mystery thriller was helmed by Scott Derrickson, who horror enthusiasts will recognise for directing The Black Phone films. Derrickson additionally acted as screenwriter, working with C. Robert Cargill.
Hawke appears opposite Juliet Rylance, portraying his screen spouse Tracy. The pair are accompanied by Michael Hall D’Addario and Clare Foley. The ensemble also includes The Good Wife performer Fred Thompson and It: Chapter Two star James Ransone.
Sinister garnered middling critiques following its debut. It secured a 64 per cent Rotten Tomatoes rating, with the reviewers’ summary stating: “Its plot hinges on typically implausible horror-movie behaviour and recycles countless genre clichés, but Sinister delivers a surprising number of fresh, diabolical twists.”
While critics weren’t entirely convinced by the production, it made a profound impact on ordinary cinema-goers. One thrilled viewer said: “Absolutely horrifying! I have never been so scared watching a movie before. Has to be the most disturbing film I have ever seen.”
Another chimed in, stating: “This is hands down one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. It gave me the same nightmarish feelings as the original Nightmare on Elm Street. Worth a watch.”
A third echoed the praise, saying the film causes “a visceral reaction, lodges into your subconscious for days on end and leave a lasting scare”.
