Despite his limited game time, totalling 82 minutes across all competitions, Zirkzee has allegedly piqued the interest of Serie A clubs. Italian publication Corriere Como reports that Como are keen on signing the Dutchman as they strive to secure a Champions League spot, with rumours of an ‘agreement’ already in place.
Fabregas’s team, which finished 10th last season, currently sits eighth after just five matches, with a mere four points separating them from table-toppers AC Milan. The report suggests that the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder is planning to ‘reshape’ his squad in the forthcoming transfer window.
The club is said to be looking to blend experience with ‘young but ready players’, and Zirkzee fits the bill. Como have a ‘concrete interest’ in the United forward, whose contract at Old Trafford is valid until June 2029, but they’re said to face competition from Juventus.
At the beginning of the year, Amorim revealed his desire to retain Zirkzee at the club. Speaking to talkSPORT, the United manager said: “I want to keep Josh because he gives everything and he’s trying in training, but we don’t know.
“The window is open and we will see what happens. We just need to focus on training and to take this for the other games. It’s just one point so let’s focus on the performance for the next games.”
In April, Amorim lavished praise upon the Dutch striker. He told reporters: “Yes, he’s doing a great job. Also, a very important thing was the way the fans reacted after that incident.
“So if you see, every time, even if Josh is not playing, every time he gets on the pitch or just warming up, our fans sing the Josh song. So that is massive for the player, so it’s 50-50. Fifty per cent part of the fans and 50 per cent of Josh.”
On helping Zirkzee settle at Old Trafford, Amorim added: “I explained the situation because, as a former player, I wanted to hear some explanation sometimes from the coaches, and I am really open to that.
“I just want to help the team and then work with him. With all the work that all the staff is doing with him he’s improving, and then I put him to play. This is the only way to show confidence to the player.”
Despite Amorim’s glowing praise, Zirkzee has found it challenging to secure a regular spot in United’s starting lineup. According to the Manchester Evening News, the board continues to support the United boss, suggesting the Dutchman will remain on the bench for now.
