It’s a company which has existed for 160 years – but many people remain unaware of what the name ‘Nokia’ actually means.
Founded by Finnish miner Fredrik Idestam, Nokia was launched in 1865 as a single paper mill operation before expanding to make various products through the 19th century.
During the late 20th century, the firm began making computers and mobile phones – eventually producing the legendary Nokia 3310 in 2000.
While it is one of the most recognisable tech brands in the world, Nokia users remain clueless about origin of the company’s name, with many turning to social media seeking explanations.
According to Nokia’s historical records, Idestam established his second paper pulp facility near the Nokianvirta River, following commercial success at Tammerkoski Rapids.
The firm chose to adopt its name from the river – initially using a fish-themed logo to represent its link to the river.
However, the river itself derived its name from an unexpected place.
The company’s website states: “The first logo of the company in no way resembled the present one. The word ‘nokia’ means a dark, furry animal currently called Pine Marten.
“The company began to use the name Nokia after the production had been transferred to a town of the same name.
“This small town in the Pirkanmaa region was founded in exactly the same year as Nokia. Approximately thirty thousand people live there today.”
Responding to this discovery on Reddit, one user remarked: “Finland companies were named after where the company was located.”
Another user chimed in: “Is there a statue of 3310 in this town somewhere?”
A third user expressed: “And yet, when I went to Nokia, they only had postcards with cats (at the post office). Not a single mention about the phone. No phone statue at the entrance to the city. I was so disappointed by this visit.”
An additional user commented: “Well, it’s just named after the city. I had a lively online discussion with some Americans once about the pronunciation of Nokia. They didn’t believe me and were adamant they were correct.”
Another user pointed out: “The river is important because it was an energy source.”
Today, Nokia remains a global tech leader, employing 104,000 specialists worldwide.
