A pet dog is typically seen as part of the family; they’re a loyal companion who can add joy to an otherwise lacklustre day. It will be evident to many pet lovers, though, that each dog develops their own sort of personality.
There is no doubt, however, that temperament, size, energy, and intelligence determine how well a dog fits into a certain lifestyle. A high-energy Siberian Husky wouldn’t be very suited to living in a small apartment dwelling, for example. But have you ever wondered if you have a rather daft pup or one that is brilliantly bright?
Dog expert Axel Lagercrantz – the CEO of Pets4homes, the UK’s biggest pet rehoming site – has revealed a simple test to gauge intelligence.
He said that intelligence is measured by several criteria, including how well they understand new commands.
Axel elaborated: “This should be within less than five repetitions; and to be placed in the top rankings, a dog should obey a recognised command first time a minimum of 95% of the time.”
In addition to this simple test, Axel has pointed out three dog breeds that he considers to be highly intelligent.
3. Golden Retriever
Axel said that the lovable “Golden Retrievers, used as guide dogs, are incredibly intelligent”.
2. Poodle
“Originally used as a water-retriever for hunters in Germany”, Axel added that they are “also exceptionally intelligent”.
1. Border Collie
Axel affirmed: “Border Collies clearly understand what their trainer or owner is telling them to do.”
