The age-old debate over the best way to eat Maltesers has finally been settled—by the experts themselves. A recent poll of 2,000 Maltesers fans revealed that more than half prefer to suck on the chocolate treat without chewing, while a quarter nibble off the outer chocolate layer before eating the centre. Another 25 per cent bite the Malteser in half and savour each piece separately.
But according to Maltesers’ own scientists, all of these methods are technically wrong. The brand has revealed that Maltesers are actually designed to be eaten in a very specific way to maximise flavour and create a multi-sensory experience. The revelation comes as Maltesers launches its brand new white chocolate variety.
Megan Rushman, Associate Product Development Scientist at Maltesers, explained the clever purpose behind the signature malt interior: “It helps break down the chocolate, preventing that sticky, hard-to-clean feeling you get on the roof of your mouth from a solid piece of chocolate.
“It’s the unique texture and balance between the chocolate and the malt centre that makes Maltesers so iconic and loved by so many.”
So, what’s the official way to enjoy them? Simply pop a whole Malteser into your mouth and crunch down completely. According to Megan, this covers the largest surface area of the palate, delivering a burst of flavour and a satisfying crunch that stimulates both taste and sound receptors.
Despite the official guidance, fans remain divided. Those who prefer to suck the treat say they enjoy the way the malt dissolves, while 23 per cent do it to prolong the experience.
Nibblers claim their method delivers two flavour hits, and 24 per cent say they just want to take their time. On average, respondents believe 22 seconds is the optimum time to savour a Malteser.
Temperature is another point of contention as 53 per cent insist room temperature is best, while 31 per cent prefer their Maltesers chilled straight from the fridge.
As for the perfect time to indulge, fans say it’s between 7pm and 9pm—ideally while watching TV (57 per cent) or as an after-dinner treat (20 per cent).
Even celebrities are weighing in. Radio presenter Kate Lawler and husband Boj shared their playful debate on the best way to eat Maltesers.
Kate said: “As a nation we love a food debate, and it’s no different in my house. Boj is adamant that you nibble the outside, while I love to pop one in and give it a crunch.
“Science might agree with me but to be honest whether you nibble, melt, or pop them in one, figuring it out is all part of the fun.”
