Households in England urged to charge phones before Monday evening | Weather | News

Households in England and Wales are being urged to charge phones and buy batteries due to a yellow weather warning for strong winds which could cause power cuts across much of the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind lasting for the next 22 hours, with gusts of up to 70mph possible along the coast, and blasts of 55mph winds even in central areas.

The yellow wind warning begins at 8pm tonight (Sunday, September 14) and lasts until 6pm on Monday, September 15.

The forecaster says delays and disruption on roads and railways are possible, while some short term loss of power could affect the areas in the warning zone.

All of Wales and all of the south of England are caught up in the yellow wind warning, as well as all of the midlands, and much of the North, with the warning stretching from Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds right down to Birmingham, London, Kent, Brighton, and all of the south coast including Devon and Cornwall.

The Met Office is warning of potential disruption to power supplies due to the storm, with households in affected areas being urged to prepare.

First, make sure mobile phones are charged, and keep a spare fully charged battery pack on hand.

This is because heavy wind storms can cause localised power cuts, so it’s best to prepare for a loss of connectivity. Landlines, also, can be cut during storms, so charging your mobile is the best way to be ready.

Those bracing for power cuts have been told to buy torches and candles, as well as batteries, and to charge their phones as well as any phone charging power banks, to ensure you’re well prepared.

The Met Office warned those in the affected areas: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
