Liverpool icon John Toshack was celebrated in deeply moving scenes during a rare public outing in Spain. The 76-year-old has endured significant health challenges in recent times after being admitted to intensive care in 2022 whilst fighting pneumonia caused by Covid complications. However, he took pride of place on the turf as Real Sociedad bestowed upon him their Diamond and Gold badge.
It is the most prestigious accolade the La Liga outfit can award to their legends of yesteryear. The heartwarming moment took place before kick-off against Real Madrid, another club where Toshack held the managerial reins and secured La Liga glory with the European powerhouses in 1990.
Flanked by his loved ones, Toshack was treated to a rapturous reception from supporters of both teams and received congratulations on the field from Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay.
Speaking shortly after his recovery from his health scare, Toshack reflected: “When somebody tells you that you were out for two weeks, it’s frightening. You can win a championship in two weeks or get relegated. When I think back on it now, it’s frightening.”
The Anfield great netted 74 goals in 172 appearances as a Reds player before embarking on a successful coaching career. He has managed over a dozen clubs across the globe and memorably guided Swansea City from the fourth tier to the top flight during his first managerial role.
His latest managerial stint was with Persian Gulf Pro League outfit Tractor, which he departed in September 2018 after a brief three-month tenure.
Real Madrid gaffer Xabi Alonso, who also boasts a Liverpool legacy, was one of the figures to honour Toshack before the match.
Toshack’s heyday as a player saw him become a bona fide football legend. His transfer to Liverpool in 1970 for a hefty £100,000 from Cardiff marked the beginning of an era that would see him lift nine trophies.
What followed was a 40-year journey in management, encompassing some of the globe’s most prestigious clubs and two periods at the helm of Wales.
During his tenure with the Welsh national team, Toshack sparked a youth movement that would usher in talents like Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen, all of whom debuted as teenagers.
His coaching career has spanned across Europe, with roles in Turkey, France, and Macedonia, not to mention Spain.
In a 2012 interview with the Daily Mail, Alonso recounted how Toshack’s decision to end his loan and promote him to the senior ranks at Real Sociedad was pivotal.
“I would not have had the success I have had if it was not for John Toshack,” he said.
“I was on loan in the Spanish second division when he called me back to play for Real Sociedad and the team were not in a good situation.
“I was 19, but he said: ‘I have the confidence in you that you can help turn this season around’. Since he put that confidence in me I have never looked back.”
