A man managed to scoop up a Too Good To Go bag from Harrods for £20, and he was left shocked at what he got. Too Good To Go is an app used by supermarkets and cafes to reduce food waste by giving it away for a fraction of the price.
The Harrods price tag is expensive compared to the bags you normally get from cafes, which are often under £5, so he took to social media to ask his followers if they thought the items he got from the luxury department store were “worth it.” Influencer Carmie Sellitto filmed himself opening and trying the contents of his £20 bag in his car, and said he was hoping he would “somehow make a profit” by getting items that totalled more than the cost of the bag. However, things didn’t start well when Carmie pulled out the first item – a giant soft pretzel. While the bakery treat probably would have been delicious when it was freshly baked, it was “so dry” by the time Carmie got to try it. He only took one bite before declaring it too dry to eat, and rated it a 4/10. Next, Carmie pulled out a bag containing a huge Scotch egg. Instead of the traditional sausage meat, however, this one came with an egg encased in chorizo – which Carmie said made it taste “really good”. He said: “I’ve never tried anything like this before, but it’s actually really good. I’m going to rate this an 8.5/10.”
The man was then able to wash down his first two snacks with a bottle of orange juice that would normally cost a whopping £6 on its own. Carmie described the juice as “insane” and gave it the highest possible rating of 10/10.
Next up was a large tiramisu pudding in a glass dish wrapped in a pink box. According to the Harrods website, this dish on its own should have been priced at £8, and it got the thumbs up from Carmie, who said it was “pretty good” despite admitting he wasn’t the biggest fan of tiramisu.
The goodies didn’t stop there. Carmie next sank his teeth into a Korean fried chicken wrap, which he gave a 7/10 and said would have been nicer if it were warm. To finish off his haul, the man showed off a pistachio cake slice, which he said was “moist” and tasted a little bit like ice cream.
Not every item Carmie got in his bag is available to price check on the Harrods website, as their fresh food isn’t listed unless it can be made to order.
But the orange juice and the tiramisu together would cost £14, meaning the pretzel, Scotch egg, Korean chicken wrap, and pistachio cake would have to cost less than £6 altogether in order for Carmie to have paid more than the food was worth – which seems unlikely.
Commenters on the video were quick to brand the Harrods Too Good To Go bag as “worth it”, as it seemed to be well worth the money Carmie spent on it – even if his pretzel was a bit dry.
One person said: “That’s great value!” While another added: “I would pay £20 for that bag without hesitation.” A third said: “The Too Good To Go Harrods bags are definitely worth it. Great value for the price, really good quality items, and such a fun surprise to see what you get.”
Too Good To Go bags are always a gamble, however, so you can’t guarantee you’ll get the same items if you scoop up a Harrods bag for yourself. The bags contain whatever food the seller needs to get rid of that day, so their contents change frequently.
The company writes on their website: “We’ve found the best way to combat wasting surplus food is by giving stores the flexibility to distribute whatever they have left at the end of the day, which can vary.”
They also acknowledge that sometimes customers won’t like the food in their bags. However, to ensure nothing gets wasted, they suggest passing any unwanted food on to family, friends, or neighbours.
