Amazon’s Android tablet is half price at less than £45 for a limited time

If you are in need of a new tablet but you’re on a strict budget, this could well be the deal for you. Amazon has slashed the price of its Fire HD 8 Android tablet to just £44.99, a price that bags you a compact device to stream content and video from the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Disney+ and ITV X.

This being an Amazon tablet, it’s also the perfect way to read all your Kindle e-books with the official Kindle app.

There are a couple of reasons why this tablet is so cheap, aside from the fact Amazon has it discounted to 50 percent of its normal price in what the retailer describes as a “limited time deal”.

This is a refurbished Amazon Fire HD 8, which means it is pre-owned. This usually means the devices have been bought but returned within the refund window, so can’t be sold as new stock.

“Each pre-owned device goes through a full diagnostic test, thorough cleaning and inspection, secure data wipe, and replacement of any defective parts identified in testing (where applicable),” Amazon explains.

It means you will get a perfectly functioning device, which you can still return within 30 days if you’re not satisfied.

The other thing to note is that this deal is for the 2022 version of the Fire HD 8, rather than the latest model released in 2024. However, if all you’re using the tablet for is streaming video and surfing the web, you’re still getting an 8-inch HD display and 32GB storage, the same as the newer model.

Amazon says you’ll get up to 13 hours of battery life from the refurbished Fire HD 8. If 32GB isn’t enough storage for you, there’s a microSD slot to expand with your own memory card up to 1TB.

Two other things to bear in mind are that firstly, you can;t download Google apps on this tablet. Amazon’s app store doesn’t offer Google apps, so you can’t use Gmail, Google Maps, or YouTube.

Secondly, this budget slate will display Amazon ads on the lock screen and potentially other areas of the software. That’s part of the trade off for the low price.

If this doesn’t bother you, you’ll get a tablet where you can use Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant service. You can ask it to play music, tell you the news headlines or weather, set reminders, and more.

And with a front facing camera, you can chat to family and friends on video calling apps such as Zoom.

For £44.99, there are few cheaper ways to get this sort of tech in 2025. If you prefer a more premium tablet though, Amazon is currently selling the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ for £122.99, down from £209. This has full access to all Android apps through the Google Play Store and has a larger, superior 11-inch display.

If you prefer an iPad, Apple’s latest 11-inch iPad released earlier this year is on sale from Amazon for £299.97, down from £329. It’ll get you much more storage at 128GB, a bigger, brighter screen and more premium build quality – plus of course running on iPadOS rather than Android.
