Bacon is a staple in many breakfast and lunch recipes, like a full English breakfast and a BLT sandwich. Most people prefer frying bacon in a pan; however, cooking this salty meat this way can result in a lot of grease splatter covering your cooker hob. For an easier method, you can microwave bacon in less time than it takes to heat your pan and oven if that’s you’re preferred method.
If you’re not used to cooking bacon in the microwave, it might sound like a terrible idea. However, you can cook bacon in the microwave in just a matter of minutes, with minimal mess. When sandwiched between layers of paper towels, bacon cooked in the microwave comes out crispy and delicious.
Cooking and nutrition enthusiast Laura Fuentes took to her recipe blog to share how to microwave bacon. She said: “If you want bacon for breakfast or need it in a recipe but don’t have time to fry it in a skillet, the microwave is your best option.
“Believe it or not, it’s possible to cook super crispy bacon in just a few seconds with the push of a button.” She claims that the “secret to cooking perfect bacon every time” is in how long you cook it.
Depending on the number of strips and the thickness of your bacon slices, you will need to cook each strip of bacon for one to one and a half minutes.
Two to four strips of bacon will need between two and four minutes. Laura recommends microwaving four slices at a time, no more.
She said, “No matter how thick your bacon is, I recommend starting with two minutes. Then, continue to cook it in 20-second intervals as needed.”
The cook pointed out that with the help of paper towels and paper plates, you can get “crispy” bacon in the microwave. Paper towels help absorb excess grease and provide a surface to “make your bacon crispy”.
For this method, place two paper plates on top of each other, and line them with at least two paper towels. Add three to four slices of bacon on top of the paper towels, making sure they’re evenly spaced.
Place a third paper towel diagonally on top of the bacon, covering as much as possible. Microwave your bacon for two minutes.
After two minutes, check your bacon to see if the pieces are firm and crispy all the way through. Remove any fully cooked bits from the plate.
If the centres are still soft, place your bacon in the microwave for 15 to 20-second intervals until it is completely crispy but not burnt.
