The weather has taken a turn for the worst in the UK as we enter the autumn months. Forecasters are warning of rainfall and strong winds over the coming days and weekend, with homeowners being urged to carry out an essential task before it’s too late.
According to the Met Office, there will be “blustery heavy showers” with potential hail and thunder across the UK from Friday, September 12 until Sunday, September 14. Home maintenance experts say the turbulent weather will pose our properties with their biggest test of the year. Overhanging branches, that have become weakened by the summer heat, may fall due to the strong winds which can lead to expensive roof repairs.
Glen Peskett, a circular saw blade specialist at Saxton Blades, said storm damage to a roof can cost homewners between £250 and £2,000. He said: “Homeowners often wait until it’s too late.
“They see a small branch hitting their roof and think nothing of it, but they don’t realise the debris is slowly chipping away at their roof tiles, and the next big storm could be the one that causes a major leak. A quick cut with the right tool now is all it takes to prevent that from happening.”
Glen is urging homeowners to carry out checks before the unsettled weekend weather arrives. He advises checking for any unsafe branches that overhang your roof or gutters.
Glen said: “If a branch is hanging over your home, it needs to be trimmed back. Use a ladder and a sharp saw to remove the limb, making sure you don’t leave a stub that will splinter and rot.”
Glen also recommends clearing any debris from your guttering to prevent blockages when the rain arrives. As well as damaging your roof, blocked guttering can cause leaks, damp and mould inside your home.
The strong winds can also cause damage to fences and garden sheds. Glen has urged homeowners to check for any loose panels which may be ripped off by the bad weather.
Similarly, homeowners should check for loose or wobbly decking boards. According to Glen, a strong gust of wind can lift the boards and cause expensive damage.
The expert said: “By following these simple steps, you can protect your home from the most common storm damage and avoid a major financial headache this winter, all while ensuring your property is in top shape for the coming months.”
