Autumn fashion trends to truly stand the test of time

Autumn fashion trends to truly stand the test of time are cardigans, ankle boots – and a tailored coat. Denim or leather jackets, midi skirts and long-flowing dresses are also scheduled to stay in style forever.

A poll of 2,000 women found 27% think flared jeans are making an autumn comeback, while 20% feel the same about double denim. Other fall wardrobe staples included a chic polo-neck (35%) and a pair of loafers (23%).

And the typical woman dons a blazer once every two weeks during this transitional fashion phase, with 35% saying autumn is the season they feel their most stylish.

The research was commissioned by Very, which has launched a new womenswear range, The Very Collection, and is hosting The Very Big Wardrobe, a central London pop-up open until the 6th September, where visitors can discover their own fashion formula.

Design manager, Sally Goodwin, said: “Your fashion formula is personal – it’s the set of pieces that always work for you, whatever the day throws at you.

“Our research shows that when women find those staples, their confidence soars. This season is about finding your five – forever items you’ll wear on repeat.”

The study, carried out via OnePoll.com, also found 51% feel more confident when they own a set of versatile, go-to pieces. While 72% said having a curated wardrobe of quality staples makes getting dressed simpler and more enjoyable.

For 89%, it’s important autumn clothing can be worn for multiple occasions, in different ways. But 63% prioritise good value for money when buying new clothes, such as when refreshing their summer wardrobes for cooler-weather gear.

Sally Goodwin, for Very, added: “Autumn dressing is all about balance. You want to feel warm and cosy, but also elevated and expressive.

“From flowing dresses to tailored outerwear, it’s a chance to play with proportions and textures in a way that feels both comforting and chic.”

“Autumn fashion is a ritual, dusting off beloved boots, rediscovering favourite coats, and leaning into earthy palettes – it’s a season that invites self-expression through layers.”
