Households across the UK are being urged to spray vinegar at entry points such as doors and windows this September. Experts are advising people to act quickly to avoid an invasion of unwanted critters in their homes.
We have now officially entered autumn in the UK which means that it is spider season. The critters will start to appear in our homes as they search for places to keep warm and sheltered. While most are harmless, they are feared by people and most don’t want them in their homes.
Fortunately, pest control expert Robert Collins at MyJobQuote.co.uk has revealed the best methods to avoid a spider invasion this month. Among his advice is the use of vinegar to deter the critters.
He explained: “The scent of the vinegar will deter spiders and make them less likely to settle in your home.
“Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water and spritz the mixture around your home.
“It’s a good idea to spray it close to entry points such as doors and windows to prevent spiders from entering in the first place.”
Spiders don’t like vinegar due to its strong acid content. As well as being irritating to them, the pests find the scent of vinegar very unpleasant.
It can disrupt their senses and stop them from entering a certain area. Spraying a mixture of diluted vinegar and water around entrances acts as a natural repellent.
Mr Collins also recommends using peppermint oil to deter spiders this month. The oil works in a similar way to vinegar, helping to repel the critters.
He explained: “Peppermint oil emits a strong scent which repels spiders. Add 15 – 20 drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz this in any areas where you’ve noticed spiders in the home.”
Peppermint oil has a strong aroma which disrupts the sensory receptors of spiders. They also dislike the chemicals it contains, such as menthol and menthone.
However, it’s important to remember that, although there are many different species of spider in the UK, not many will bite you. Those that do bite are not harmful to your health and are quit rare.
