Netflix adds underrated horror 'masterpiece' with Grey's Anatomy star

Netflix has just dropped a ‘modern-day slasher masterpiece’ that features a Grey’s Anatomy star.

The thriller Thanksgiving will join the streaming giant’s catalogue from September 1.

It arrives at the perfect moment for those eager to kick off their frightening season early.

The film was penned and helmed by renowned horror director Eli Roth. Roth is recognised for crafting the Hostel franchise and the recent video game adaptation Borderlands.

Thanksgiving originally started as a mock film preview created by Roth, which featured in the Grindhouse double bill by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.

Roth subsequently developed his fictional preview into a complete feature film. The storyline of Thanksgiving follows a sinister masked killer who terrorises inhabitants of Plymouth, Massachusetts, twelve months after a Black Friday disturbance concluded in disaster, reports the Mirror.

He eliminates targets individually, with the apparently random vengeance murders soon forming part of a broader, malevolent scheme.

The production is actually Eli Roth’s most acclaimed film, boasting an outstanding 84% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The cast includes Patrick Dempsey, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy as well as Enchanted and Bridget Jones’ Baby.

Numerous critiques suggested it represented the filmmaker’s finest achievement yet.

One reviewer declared: “This throwback to 90s horror slasher is Roth’s best work.”

Another commented: “I can absolutely see this film becoming a new holiday classic, solely on its opening scene…”

One critique indicated the film delivers everything devotees of the genre could desire.

They wrote: “Thanksgiving gives most of what people want from the slasher subgenre. It has some wit, it has twists, it has novelty, and it’s genuinely well-made.”

These sentiments are echoed by the majority of enthusiasts as well.

One viewer expressed their opinion online, stating: “This is an amazing horror film that Eli Roth has made and it should be getting more attention and it deserves a wider audience.”

They added: “This movie is sort of underrated, and it should be viewed higher. Great special effects, acting, directing, writing and performances. The opening sets up everything for the entire movie. I love the ending. Each kill is very violent, graphic, bloody and gory. This movie is my favourite that Eli Roth has done.”

Another person remarked: “A modern-day slasher masterpiece. Wow! Similar to the likes of 1978’s Halloween or 1996’s Scream, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is one hell of a throwback treat!”.

A different individual responded: “Thanksgiving is so aggressively over-the-top, but at least it knows and embraces it. Eli Roth’s slasher film features some of the most gruesome and hilarious kills of the year. Silly and absurd B-movie horror that can be a killer good time if you’re open to it. He really blessed us with one of the best slashers in modern memory, hilariously over-the-top, blood-soaked carnage!”

Thanksgiving is streaming on Netflix.
