A ‘harrowing’ period drama dubbed ‘one of the most important movies ever made’ is set to be streaming for free.

The 2019 film Mr Jones will become available on the streaming service at no cost from September 2nd thanks to BBC iPlayer.

The production draws inspiration from true events and chronicles the life and career of Welsh journalist Gareth Jones.

Those unable to wait can access it through Prime Video with an active subscription.

The synopsis reveals how the narrative unfolds following the uncovering of proof regarding the genocidal starvation orchestrated by Stalin’s political machinery in Ukraine.

An intrepid reporter strives to document this manufactured disaster.

This gripping political thriller emerges from acclaimed filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Welsh correspondent Gareth Jones (James Norton: Little Women) puts his existence on the line to reveal the reality of the catastrophic hunger crisis in the Soviet Union during the early 1930s, reports the Mirror.

Headlining the ensemble is Happy Valley and Playing Nice actor James Norton in the role of Gareth Jones. Supporting him are Marvel’s Vanessa Kirby and Peter Sarsgaard, recognised for his performances in September 5 and Green Lantern.

The production holds an impressive 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with numerous critics applauding its relevance and demonstration of journalism’s significance in contemporary politics.

One critic observed: “Jones’s story has been largely forgotten, so it’s commendable that this film is bringing it back to the forefront.”

Another remarked: “An effective and harrowing period drama, one that you may struggle to shake off for some time.”

A third wrote: “Perhaps in the 1990s, Mr Jones would have gained some mild attention from Academy voters for telling a dark story with just the right amount of frankness and Hollywood sheen.”

Audiences are equally captivated by the film’s content and the stellar performances of its lead actors. One admirer declared, “One of the most important movies ever made.”

Meanwhile, another shared their thoughts online: “Stunning film, chilling, about a piece of history few know anymore. It rings true for our time also, that nature is turned against for the sake of power and money, followed by cover-ups of epic proportion.”

They elaborated: “James Norton is required to be at his best, and he is, and Vanessa Kirby is inspiring as his comrade in truth. Please watch this fil,m which is also visually stark and honest.”

Another person recommended: “Absolutely brilliant and well worth watching in spite of the harrowing scenes. It’s a story that needs to be told as the background to the current Ukrainian situation. Incredible acting by James Norton.”

Mr Jones is streaming on Prime Video and BBC iPlayer from September 2.
