UK households urged to rub lemons along window sills this week

UK households should rub lemons along their window sills if they want to prevent one scary invasion in Autumn. Summer is coming to a close, and temperatures across the UK are dropping, with parts of the country experiencing cold snaps as low as 3C in the coming days. Autumn brings a number of changes. We won’t be seeing as many bees as we do in spring and summer, but there are other insects we might see more of.

To prevent them, we can rub lemons on our window sills. Brits can expect to see more spiders in autumn as this time of the year is the insect’s mating season. This means that males will be out looking for female spiders to mate with. Additionally, the changing conditions outside mean that they might look for warmth inside, making it more likely for them to enter your home. To prevent this, there are a number of things you can do.

One of those clever tricks is to introduce scents that spiders will want to avoid. Therefore, lemon is a great way to deter spiders from entering your home.

However, you need to identify their entry points first. As temperatures remain relatively warm for much of the country, many Brits will continue to leave their windows open in an attempt to keep their homes cool.

This gives spiders plenty of opportunity to enter homes. However, the smell of lemon when they are about to enter might make them turn around. The experts at Zoflora explained that spiders don’t like strong scents, including citrus smells such as lemon and lime.

“Spiders really don’t like strong scents such as citrus, peppermint, tea-tree, lavender, rose or cinnamon,” the expert revealed. One way to introduce a citrus smell to potential entry points is to rub lemon around window sills.

This can be done using lemon slices or just the skin of a lemon. As long as the smell is present, it will help to keep spiders away. Orange peels and limes can also be used.

Additionally, smells that spiders will be turned away with include cinnamon, vinegar and lavender. There are a number of ways to bring these smells to entry points, such as candles, sprays and oil diffusers.
