Vets have revealed one vegetable that you might not have realised dogs can eat. Not only can they eat it, but it is actually really good for them. It is packed full of nutrients and vitamins that will benefit your pet’s overall health. Dog owners can sometimes get confused about which foods their pets can eat. There are some foods, including fruits and vegetables, that are perfectly safe for humans to eat but pose serious threats to dogs.

Raisins, garlic and chocolate are just some examples of food for humans that should never be fed to dogs. Additionally, dogs should never be given fatty scraps of meat, as this can be bad for their heart and stomach health. But there are some foods that humans often eat that dogs can also eat, which are actually very beneficial for them to consume. One of those foods, according to the experts at VetsNow, is sweet potato.

“Many fruits and vegetables are not only safe for dogs, but they’re also packed with nutrients and can be a healthy addition to their regular diet, when served in moderation,” they said.

They add, “Vegetables are full of vitamins and antioxidants to support your dog’s bodily functions.” Sweet potatoes have a number of benefits for dogs.

They advise: “Rich in fibre and beta-carotene, cooked sweet potatoes are a hit with dogs. Serve plain and cooked (never raw) for easy digestion.”

Meanwhile, experts at The Vets explained: “Sweet potatoes are often found as an ingredient in many high-quality dog foods because they are rich in dietary fibre, vitamins (like A, B6, and C), and minerals like iron, calcium, and selenium.

“They also provide beta-carotene, which is beneficial for your dog’s vision, growth, and muscle strength.”

They added: “Sweet potatoes should be served without any additives like butter, salt, or seasoning that could potentially harm your dog.

“As with any dietary changes, it’s recommended to schedule a nutrition consultation with your veterinarian before adding sweet potato to your dog’s diet. They can provide guidance on the appropriate amount based on your dog’s specific needs.”
