Large swathes of the UK are set to be hit by heavy rainfall next week, with the Midlands and parts of South Wales expected to bear the brunt of the storm. Forecasts from WXCharts show the rain will hit almost the whole country, stretching more than 450 miles from as far south as Plymouth and Southampton, up through Wales, the Midlands, Manchester, and into the north of Scotland by midday on Wednesday, September 3. The heaviest downpours marked in yellow and red on the maps are predicted over Worcestershire, Birmingham, Stoke, and parts of Greater Manchester, with rainfall totals of up to 5mm to 7mm in some areas.
According to a new Netweather map, the rainfall is expected to continue into the afternoon, with the heaviest showers likely around 3pm, bringing up to 7mm of rain. The map highlights concentrated downpours across the Midlands, Northern England, and Yorkshire, including areas such as East Yorkshire and Leeds.
The Met Office has also stated that rain is likely, with further unsettled conditions expected across much of the UK in the coming days.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast for the period August 29 – September 7 reads: “Low pressure is expected to largely dominate through this period, bringing bands of rain or showers to most, if not all, parts from time to time.
“Some heavy rain is possible at times, especially in the west, but this possibly occurring more widely at times. Periods of windier weather are also likely.
“Confidence in the details remains on the low side, something not untypical at this time of year, largely due to the potential for further systems to develop in the tropical Atlantic, which can have profound knock-on effects on the weather patterns upstream of and over the UK.
“Temperatures should generally be around average, likely with some day-to-day oscillation, depending on sunshine amounts.”
