Adam Frost has shared a gardening hack that allows him to use less water and could potentially save cash when he grows vegetables. Speaking in a recent interview on Zoe Ball’sBBC Radio 2, the Gardeners’ World favourite opened up about the impact the dry weather has had on his garden, but noted that one element had been “really good”.
Zoe, who dubbed gardeners the “modern rockstars”, asked him what was “doing well” and what was “struggling”, to which Adam replied that, like many people in the UK, he’d been trying to keep things “alive”. Despite the current less-than-ideal conditions, it seems his vegetable patch is thriving, suggesting that it could be down to his departure from the “classic way” of planting.
Indeed, the 55-year-old, who doesn’t like to water “too much”, explained that the tactic he adopts actually “uses less water”, indicating that if others follow suit, it may even save them money.
He said: “I mean, to be fair (like most people), it’s been dry. I live in a dry part of the country anyway, so it’s been that, and I don’t like to water too much. So, really, it’s been about keeping certain things alive more than anything, but the veg garden.
“The veg garden’s been really good, and I don’t plant the veg garden in a classic way. I sort of plant everything together, which actually uses less water, so my veg garden’s been really good.”
He added that he’d been picking the “million courgettes and the beans”, which sparked a conversation about the former. In fact, he even said courgettes are a good choice for beginners.
Adam advised: “I say to anybody, if you’ve never grown veg, grow courgettes. It’s the easiest thing in the world and also because you end up with so many. You know, you sort of, you can’t fail.”
Comenting on a different chapter in his life, Adam recently shared insights into his marriage with Sulina, whom he met in the 90s. The couple share four children; Abi-Jade, Jacob, Amber-Lily, and Oakley.
In a candid chat with Yours magazine, the green-fingered presenter, who appears on-screen alongside the likes of Monty Don and Carol Klein, dubbed his wife “more than strong”.
He noted that it’s often said that behind a “successful man” is a “strong woman”, but claimed Sulina is “more than strong”. In fact, he affectionately dubbed her a “bit scary”.
Adam added: “The kids say she’s a lioness. If you’re unpleasant to me or the children, you end up with the wrath of Mrs Frost. We don’t want to cross Mrs Frost.”
Indeed, even though Adam is renowned for his horticultural prowess, his wife also likes to get involved in the garden. He revealed that although he enjoys “gardening for wildlife”, Sulina reportedly prefers to keep their space orderly.
