This beautiful little city is known for its historic architecture and stunning cathedral. Now, it’s been named by Which? as the best ‘town or village’ in the UK – even though it has city status. The small area of Wells, Somerset, has a quaint and quintessentially British feel. The ancient city is situated in the district of Mendip in the heart of rural countryside.
Which says: “The two best small towns in the UK are within an hour-and-a-half drive of each other – in the neighbouring counties of Somerset and Wiltshire.
“More than 9,000 Which? members rated the inland towns and villages they’d visited, with the top spots going to Wells in Somerset and Avebury in Wiltshire.
“They were followed by other highly rated towns in every corner of the UK – from Scotland to Dorset – and North Wales to the Lake District.”
Wells is a small city but it has plenty to offer. It’s an easy drive from Bristol, Cardiff and Bath making it an easy destination to get to.
One must-visit spot is its cathedral which is a huge focal point in the city.
One person who visited the cathedral on Tripadvisor said: “We bought the combined ticket for Wells Cathedral and the Palace / Gardens next door.
“I’d recommend doing both, as they are all amazing and made for an awe-inspiring afternoon. Give yourself a couple of hours, as there is lots to take in.
“The cathedral is breathtaking and it was so nice to actually get a chance to go inside, as up until last week we’d only seen it from the outside when passing through. Definitely recommend taking time to go!”
While you’re there, you can’t miss wandering around its marketplace area or taking a trip to Milton Lodge Gardens.
Wells received an overall destination score of 83% in Which’s ranking.
It scores highly for food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, attractiveness, shopping, and finally, peace and quiet.
