Many homeowners aren’t aware that their electrical system could actually be putting them at risk. Outdated electrics, which may be present in any older homes, increase the risk of fire, electric shocks, and damage to appliances. And, if the system is found to have been unsafe once these have occurred, it could invalidate any insurance claims you may wish to make.
With this in mind, James Harrison, director at Fusion Electrical, has shared the key warning signs that your home’s electricity system could be “dangerously outdated”. The first of these warning signs is frequent circuit breaker trips, with James explaining: “If your fuse box or breakers are constantly shutting off, it means your system is overloaded or faulty. This is a clear indication that your wiring or electrical panel needs urgent attention.”
Another sign that shouldn’t be ignored is if your lights flicker or dim when you turn them on. This suggests that the wiring is unable to handle the current load.
James highlights that this is quite common in older homes, where the electrical systems weren’t designed to handle the power demands of today’s world.
He added that it’s important to regularly check for scorch marks or a burning smell near sockets and switches.
“These signs often go unnoticed but are very dangerous,” he warned. “They indicate overheating or faulty connections, which could easily lead to an electrical fire.”
James’s final piece of advice is to get a professional electrical inspection if they notice any of these signs. And while upgrades may be expensive, it’s well worth the price to keep yourself and your family safe.
He finished: “Don’t wait for an accident to happen. Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, and scorch marks are silent alarms your electrics need urgent attention.”
