Drivers urged to check tyre pressure this week

Experts have shared their advice for car owners in a heatwave, explaining why tyre pressure needs to be checked. The UK is currently baking in its fourth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures exceeding 30C in many parts of the country. Many will struggle to keep their homes cool and their bodies hydrated during such hot weather. For drivers, there are extra concerns when a heatwave hits.

Hot temperatures are expected to be around for the rest of the week and into the weekend, according to the latest weather maps showing a scorching red covering a huge chunk of the UK. For those using their cars this week as the country endures the heatwave, there are a number of things they need to check. As well as ensuring they have enough water to keep them hydrated during their journeys, they need to check the pressure of their tyres when temperatures soar.

Experts at DiscoverCars.com have shared a number of tips for drivers using their cars this week. They explained that tyre pressure can significantly change during hot weather.

Tyres can overinflate due to the expansion of air inside them, which could lead to excessive wear or even a blowout, they warned.

They say that it is crucial to monitor your tyre pressure during a heatwave to ensure the safety of your vehicle. Before long trips, make sure your tyres are properly inflated.

The experts commented: “In hot weather, your tyres can overinflate due to the expansion of air inside them, which could lead to excessive wear or even a blowout. It’s crucial to monitor tyre pressure during a heatwave to keep your vehicle safe. Make sure your tyres are correctly inflated before and after long trips.”

According to the experts at Davanti, tyre pressure generally increases by 0.1 bar for every 10C – even if the vehicle has been stationary.

Speaking of driver safety during a heatwave, Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at DiscoverCars.com, said: “When it comes to driving in sweltering temperatures, you should always make sure you stay hydrated and well-rested throughout the journey.

“Keep bottles of water at the ready and make sure you stop to take breaks on longer drives.

“You should also make sure your car is prepared for the hot weather. Ensure your air conditioning and cooling systems are in good working order, as you’ll be reliant on these once the hot weather takes over!”
