Hydrangeas are the stars of countless gardens, displaying vibrant and abundant blooms that add a touch of perfection to any outdoor space. Whilst these hydrangeas are fairly easy to care for, they do need some attention to thrive truly, especially regarding feeding.
Proper nutrition is essential for hydrangeas, supplying them with vital nutrients to create those stunning flowers that gardeners adore. The green-fingered experts at Garden Oasis shared their secret “homemade feed” on Facebook for maintaining hydrangeas that keep “blooming all summer”. They posted their plant guidance with the title: “How to keep your hydrangea flowers thriving and blooming all summer with a simple homemade recipe.”
They explained the significance of proper feeding for year-round beauty, providing an easy recipe for a DIY mixture to ensure your hydrangeas remain in peak condition.
Recipe for the homemade hydrangea feed
Ingredients
- One gallon of water
- One tablespoon of baking soda
- One tablespoon of Epsom salt
- Half a teaspoon of ammonia-free liquid dish soap
- One teaspoon of seaweed extract (optional)
Method
Start by mixing the water, baking soda, Epsom salt, dish soap, and seaweed extract if using.
Next, apply this solution to the base of your hydrangea plants every two to four weeks for optimal results.
In addition to using this fertiliser, gardening experts suggest deep watering when the soil feels dry, mulching to maintain moisture and temperature, selective pruning for new growth, and ensuring adequate sunlight and the correct soil pH levels.
They also recommend a balanced, slow-release fertiliser as necessary. The gardening experts remarked: “With this homemade feed and proper care, your hydrangeas will bloom vibrantly all summer, adding beauty to your garden in the coming weeks.”
Backyard Boss’s gardening pros have found that baking soda is “surprisingly effective at helping perk up plants and brighten blooms”.
It aids the plant in holding more moisture at the root level, leading to “bigger blooms” with “more vibrant colours that last longer than they would otherwise”.
Furthermore, they added that Epsom salt is a “superb choice for improving soil fertility” and boosting plant health, but that it is also a provider of “essential nutrients” to tackle common gardening issues.
