Despite the late Queen Elizabeth II going “above and beyond” to welcome Meghan Markle into the Royal Family when they began dating in 2017, the couple eventually quit as senior working royals in 2020.
The moment the relationship first seemed to show cracks was when a row broke out over Meghan’s tiara for her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018, an expert has claimed.
Meghan and the late Queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly, reportedly disagreed about the tiara. Valentine Low, royal correspondent for The Times, said in an extract in his new book, Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, that Prince Harry thought the Queen’s dresser was being “obstructive” when she tried to access it for hair trials.
Mr Low claims that Harry “put pressure on Kelly to bend the rules” and used “some fairly fruity language” when addressing her.
Speaking on Reading the Royals, the Daily Mail’s diary editor, Richard Eden said: “Harry felt that Meghan wasn’t being treated as she should. Everyone should show her great respect, and here was a servant, who was being quite difficult and obstructive. It set a bad tone for the marriage and relationship with the Royal Family.”
The expert added that the “heart of the problem” was setting a date for a trial with the tiara and Meghan’s hairdresser, which Harry details in his memoir Spare. He claims the dresser and team were difficult to contact.
Meghan famously chose the Queen Mary bandeau tiara on her wedding day. It featured a centre stone comprised of diamonds, which was once a brooch of Queen Mary’s, made into an Art Deco bandeau-style tiara in 1932.
