Skirting boards can be seen in most homes across the UK and are used for both aesthetic and practical reasons. They can prevent the lower section of walls from being damaged by shoes, vacuums, and furniture. They also conceal the area between the floor and the wall, making homes look neat and tidy.
However, over time, skirting boards can become covered in dust, making even the cleanest homes appear untidy. Luckily, according to fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, there is an easy way to prevent dust from gathering on skirting boards in the first place.
The revelation came after Facebook user Judith Grenville-Roberts posted on the group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’, asking for advice on how to stop dust collecting on her skirting boards.
The post was inundated with responses, but wiping down skirting boards with fabric softener was the most suggested solution.
Angela Maria said: “Water with a drop of fabric conditioner keeps dust down.”
Claire Phillips commented: “Capful of fabric softener, hot water and a cloth. Wipe all around. Stops the dust settling for weeks because of the slippery texture. Works really well.”
Billie Murphy replied: “Hoover them with the brush attachment, and water down fabric softener and spray and wipe. The fabric softener stops the dust from settling as much.”
Hilary Ross suggested: “Put clothing softener in the water before cleaning. It helps to deflect dust.”
Fabric softener has antistatic properties, which means that when it’s applied to surfaces, it can repel dust and prevent it from settling.
Most homes have fabric softener, but if you don’t, you can buy it from most supermarkets and shops for as little as 99p.
Another hack that was recommended by Mrs Hinch fans was recommended by Mrs Hinch fans was using tumble dryer sheets.
Sarah March said, “I use tumble dryer sheets. They are antistatic, so they repel dust. A bonus is that they make the room smell lush.”
Jacqui Harden agreed and wrote: “Tumble dryer sheets work fantastically for me and leave it smelling nice too.”
