Many gardeners are stressed by unpredictable weather happening in August. However, there’s a natural remedy that could offer plants the extra boost they need to bloom beautifully, no matter the conditions. Gardeners are being urged to mix two simple ingredients found in most kitchens.
A lifestyle DIY creator, Armen Adamjan (@creative_explained), took to Instagram to reveal that mixing coffee and oats can help your garden thrive. This surprising combination is gaining popularity for its ability to enrich soil and encourage stronger, healthier plant growth. With minimal effort and costs but maximum results, gardeners won’t be tempted to turn back to store-bought fertilisers.
How to make it
Armen went on to share: “Got some old coffee grounds? Dump them in a bowl and mix in one tablespoon of oats, a pinch of cinnamon and hot water.
“Let it cool, then pour this on the soil of your plants. It feeds the good bacteria, keeps bugs away and adds nutrients like nitrogen.”
What you’ll need summarised:
- Coffee grounds
- Oats
- Cinnamon
- Hot water
How it works
Home and Gardens revealed that using coffee grounds on plants can both feed them and help deter slugs and snails. They also explained that oats contain three key nutrients for plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
A gardener and herbalist, Daniela Rey, spoke to the gardening blog and explained: “Nitrogen’s most important purpose is to help plants grow big green foliage. It is used in many plant processes to synthesise amino acids, proteins, chlorophyll and enzymes
“Oats also contain a unique type of fibre that nourishes and restores healthy bacteria in the soil. This bacteria helps break down organic matter in the soil, making it available to plants.”
Cinnamon is a key agent due to its powerful properties. This spice can stimulate root growth in almost every plant variety, according to Gardening Know How.
Cinnamon can also help fight against fungal problems such as damping off disease, slime mould, and mushrooms. Due to its strong scent, it also helps deter pests such as ants.
Other good natural fertilisers
Armen also advises against throwing out banana peels. He states, “Soak them overnight in some water, and boom, the water will turn into a golden liquid filled with potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium.”
“Phosphorus helps your plants grow strong stems and more fruits.” He also suggests creating a similar formula with cucumber peels: simply soak them in water for a few hours and then strain them.
Cucumber water will be packed with potassium, magnesium and silica. This mixture will keep plants healthy and fight off disease.
